Valour & Valkyrie New Season -The Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake…OUR BRAND NEW AW 14 COLLECTION.

WAIT until you see the NEW print, after rummaging through vintage stores and visiting flea markets all over London we discovered a stunning vintage scarf . This was the beginning of the print design. We realised we would have to use digital printing technique to get the intricate detail into the print, so we reworked it with our local manufacturers into a soft monotone colour palette distressing the ground to give it a parchment effect. The REED LIFE print was born.

We feel this completely encompasses all that is beautiful about the story of the LADY OF THE LAKE….A fairytale, an enchanted tale, bewitching and whimsical…..

Made in Britain

While British fashion is known worldwide, 100% British-manufactured clothing can be harder to find. Despite UK brands receiving global acclaim, around 90% of the clothes we wear now come from abroad. However, is 2014 going to be the year that “fashion comes home”?

The tide is gradually changing, and has been for the last couple of years. The UK fashion industry is worth an estimated £21 billion and, as a result, has driven interest in how we can keep more of that value here on our soil.

While we can’t always compete on price, we can compete on quality. Tom Lutwyche, a Savile Row tailor, was recently quoted as saying: “the companies that survived and continue to manufacture in the UK are the Rolls Royces rather than the British Leylands of this world”.

Perhaps it’s that we’ve become more patriotic after the Olympics and Jubilee a couple of years back, but it seems that there’s a growing demand for exclusive British manufactured clothing. Most notably, luxury, high-end brands have seen a spike as people search for the ‘Made in Britain’ tag. Once again, we’ve become respected by both Britons and foreigners alike, who appreciate our heritage and skilled craftsmanship. Anya Hindmarch claims that “Made in Britain has a cachet again. It’s a shorthand for a certain kind of luxury”.

Brands like Mulberry (who have reinvested £2 million into its Somerset factory) and Barbour (who have been making garments in their Tyne and Wear factory since 1894) are classic examples. In fact, MD of Barbour Steve Buck, has said that the inspiration for their jackets comes from our rich British history and heritage.

Here at V & V, Britishness is in our DNA. With support from key members of the fashion and apparel community, we are manufacturing more and more of our garments here in the UK. Our fabulous Jersey Cowl Dresses (which come in coral and bright blue) are all made in Britain. And we’ll also be making an appearance at this month’s Made in Britain trade show. We like to think our British-manufactured clothes are the Rolls Royce of fashion… try them and see for yourself.

Sweater Tops: The Most Wearable Fashion Trend Of 2014

Sweater Top

There are many versatile pieces that spring to mind when picturing the contents of our wardrobes: cardigans, long-sleeved tops, the loyal friend that is your favourite pair of jeans, perhaps. However, nothing screams “multipurpose” like sweater tops do. Sweater tops have the ability to transform themselves according to your needs; combine one with an elegant skirt or those trusty jeans; wear under a jacket or over a dress.

As well as being very easy to pair with other pieces, sweater tops are also a very practical item to which you can always turn when the temperatures aren’t in your favor. Think Glastonbury, or any other festival for that matter. Throw one on to cover up and you’ll immediately feel boho-chic. Barbecues, balmy evenings drinking sangria on the balcony, early evening walks; sweater tops will be your go-to item this season when there’s a cool breeze in the air.

They are also a key top for the whole year, taking you through autumn and winter. Sweater tops will be your must-have party piece when paired with some killer heels or striking jewellery; they’ll ooze understated glamour like no cardigan ever could. Similarly, dress them down with some boots or stylish trainers and you’ll look effortlessly stylish.

There’s more than a fair share of celebs who have embraced the sweater top trend recently, too. Miranda Kerr is a fan of the laid-back look, pairing hers with denim shorts and suede ankle boots, whereas Olivia Palermo glams hers up with leather trousers, a fur vest and burgundy boots. Sofia Coppola loves her sweater tops so much she wore her striped-design on the red carpet recently with skinny trousers and open-toed heels.

However you choose to wear them, sweater tops are guaranteed to be the shining star of your wardrobe this summer – and throughout the year. Watch this space this autumn… V and V are putting the final touches to our exclusive sweater tops (made in the UK) that you won’t be able to resist.

Summer Sparkle

From barely-there glimmer to full-on shimmer, summers are made for sparkling. Julien Macdonald recently claimed: “there’s no such thing as too much sparkle or too much glitter”. Do you agree?

Like with any women’s fashion statement, the amount you sparkle is entirely up to you. You don’t always need to look like you’re about to step onto the Strictly Come Dancing stage. Sparkle can come in the form of accessories, shoes, little details on a blouse or – if you so wish – a floor-length sparkling gown.

Similarly, sparkle can come in any colour. For toned-down glamour, how about a neutral colour palette? This way, you’ll let the sequins do the talking. For evening chic, try black or grey.

Sparkle inspiration can also come from a variety of sources. Julien recently explained that the sequins found on the runway at his Spring/Summer ’14 show came from Morocco. He was inspired by the architecture, the textiles and all the glamorous people in their incredible gowns and kaftans. His catwalk sparkle was given colour from crystals and faceted sequins and, unsurprisingly, his garments revealed a lot of skin. “It’s the summer”, he said, “why not”? How much you dare to bare, of course, is your decision.

Here at V&V, we love sparkle in the form of embellishment. Even casual or sporty pieces can carry some embellishment in order to give a garment a touch of evening sophistication. Hints of sparkle can enrich our wardrobes, turning something plain into something plain amazing.

We all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but we also like sparkle created by facet beads. Our signature Sama Tunic in black or grey is a perfect example of pure elegance created by this 3D textural effect.

Similarly, our statement Midas Blouse is the ideal option for after-dark allure, designed for dressing down with jeans or dressing up with our Tulip Skirt. The blouse is made from chiffon and has a sequin front with a fully-lined bodice and sheer long sleeves. Naturally, the blouse is given the V&V signature touch with a chunky gold zip at the back.

Hot Trend: Summer In Black

Black – in the middle of the summer? While we may be more accustomed to floaty white blouses and dresses during the sunny season, black has never been so cool.

Ok, so it may be a little sticky if you’re living in dessert-like temperatures, but over here in the UK we can take advantage of our cooler evenings and breezy days. Just as you can never go wrong with a black swimsuit or little black dress, it’s the colour of choice for summer daytime wear when you want to exude that classy, understated and slightly gothic-chic look. For designer women’s fashion, black is so easy to dress up in the evenings with some statement jewellery or a splash of colour.

Black is such a versatile colour that the options are limitless – LBDs can be dressed up with some killer heels, down with some boho sandals, or made sporty-chic with some funky trainers. Black can take you to the office or club – it can be sophisticated or edgy. Or both.

Funeral black. That was the theme at Marc Jacob’s final show for Louis Vuitton, and it was his way of saying goodbye to his 16-year tenure at the house. Black signalled the end – everything was black and every model donned a dramatic feather headdress. Many designers out there have shown their appreciation of summer black since.

Black is set to be all the rage this summer, and we at V & V couldn’t be happier. A black dress or blouse is something that will never date – it’ll be your go-to item in your wardrobe and make you feel instantly special. For those interested in designer women’s fashion, you’ll be spoilt for choice at V & V.  From our fabulous Assyrie Blouse and Black Zoe Cowl Top to our Mideau Dress and Sama Tunic, get heads turning in one of our designer pieces.

Are you ready to be a black beauty this summer?
